Overview

The PTA has over 30 committees, which work throughout the school year to coordinate programs, events, and services for the students at Lehman-Jackson Elementary. To inquire further about any of the following committees please contact one of our PTA officers.

Assembly

Researches and coordinates approximately three assemblies during the school year. These assemblies are PTA funded and sponsored. Our assemblies are not only fun but also educational.

Basketball

PTA Basketball is open to all 3rd, 4th, 5th, & 6th grade students (boys and girls). Its purpose is to introduce the basic fundamentals of basketball and to give the children a non-competitive environment in which to build upon those skills.

Book Fair
Held once a year to allow students to purchase a variety of books. Volunteers are asked to assist the younger students with their purchases. Any “free” books or funds obtained as a result of the fair benefit the school’s library.

Cafeteria / Recess Monitors
This committee has been a great success with both teachers and students. PTA members volunteer their time to help the younger children during the Kindergarten through 2nd grade lunch period. PTA volunteers also assist the teachers supervise the children in the playground immediately following lunch.

Calendar
The PTA publishes a yearly calendar which details PTA-sponsored events as well as important school calendar dates such as holidays and vacations, significant events, teacher in-services, and early dismissals.

Campbell’s Labels / General Mills Box Tops For Education
Students and their families collect labels / boxtops and other proofs of purchase from a variety of products. A drop off box is located in the school cafeteria. PTA members pick up and sort the labels, which are used to purchase items such as computer software, gym equipment, and educational videos for the school.

Communications Committee

Volunteers are responsibile for notifying members of the General Meetings and events.

Dance
This committee organizes and chaperones the 5th and 6th grade dance.

Field Days
Committee members work with the physical education teacher to host an annual “field day” where students participate in a variety of activities. Volunteers are needed for the two-day event for tasks such as score keeping, judging, and ribbon/certificate distribution. This annual event is held in Mid-May.

Fundraiser

This committee organizes the annual PTA fund-raiser. All profits from this event are used to fund PTA functions such as assemblies and field trips.

Halloween Parade
This committee coordinates the annual Halloween Parade. PTA members are needed to distribute flyers, oversee parking, and help the children in the lower grades dress for the parade.

Health & Safety

This committee offers a Health & Safety Day in October. Topics such as bus safety and fire prevention are presented to the students.

Hospitality
Members recruit volunteers to bake desserts and set up refreshments for the PTA Tea, Kindergarten Christmas Program, and monthly PTA meetings. This committee also maintains all supplies.

Lobby Decoration

PTA members are responsible for decorating the school’s main lobby for the different seasons and holidays throughout the school year.

Membership
One of the most important committees, the membership committee coordinates the annual national PTA membership drive with the objective to increase membership in the PTA each year.

Newsletter/Website

The PTA newsletter, published monthly, provides information on PTA programs and events. This and other pertinent school information can also be found on the website at www.lje-pta.com. There is also a link from the school district's website.

Pre-Kindergarten Program

Chairpersons coordinate volunteers to assist the elementary school with this program for children who will be attending the school the following year. Children participate in a basic screening, tour and have lunch in the school cafeteria, and ride the school bus – all in preparation of their first year at LJE.

Publicity
This committee’s main function is to keep the public informed of all the great things our PTA is doing. Responsibilities include informing local TV and newspapers of all PTA events and taking pictures, writing articles.

RIF
The PTA works with the national RIF (Reading is Fundamental) organization to promote reading through special events during the school year. Each event features a theme and guest readers visit classes.

Santa’s Secret Shop
In December children are given the opportunity to purchase holiday gifts for the family and friends at very reasonable prices at Santa’s Secret Shop. The shop is managed and staffed by PTA volunteers.

School Store
PTA members volunteer to help the children shop for school supplies approximately three times per year. Chairpersons also call upon members to help set up and break down the store as needed.

School/Student Gardens

This committee maintains the various gardens on the LJE grounds.

Skating Parties
The PTA organizes skating parties during the school year so students can meet after school in a fun and safe social setting.

Summer Reading
This committee works to promote and encourage reading during the summer by challenging students to read a required number of days over summer vacations. Based on the days read, students are rewarded with a variety of prizes when they return in September.

Teacher Appreciation
One week out of the school year, the PTA shows it appreciation to our teachers and staff with a variety of special treats and a luncheon.

White Christmas
Committee members coordinate a food drive and prepare baskets for the needy every December. The list of recipients is confidential. The baskets are distributed right before Christmas.

Yearbook
This committee compiles the LJE yearbook. Duties include taking pictures throughout the year at the teachers’ request and working with publicity to select additional photos for the yearbook.
